Daytona Hour 18

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Alex Job Racing drivers Bill Sweedler (Westport, Conn.), Townsend Bell (San Luis Obispo, Calif.), Frankie Montecalvo (Highlands, N.J.), and Pierre Kaffer (Germany) is currently 10th in the GTD class after 18 hours of the 55th IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Kaffer was behind the wheel of the No. 23 Audi LMS GT3 in the overnight hours, while a moderate, steady rain fell on the World Center of Racing. During his nearly three hour stint, he had fight changing track conditions, while trying to keep his tire temps up during multiple cautions before turning the car over to Bell.

"The conditions are really tricky out there," Kaffer said of his "The track conditions are always changing. It's really difficult to get the tires to work - to get some heat in the tires. It takes a lot of concentration to keep the car on the track. It's not easy with all of the cautions and the temperatures go down on the tires. It takes ages to get some temperature in the tires. It's interesting."
In the midst of a triple stint, Bell started the final six hours in 10th. He battled through ever-changing changing track conditions with mixed results. When the track was really wet, the No. 23 Audi did not seem to perform that well. But, when the track was in an intermediate state (wet and dry), the car was really strong. In fact, Bell ran some of the fastest GTD lap times under those conditions.

"Right now, it's really kind of fascinating," Bell said of his stint under changing track conditions. "Depending on the amount of moisture on the track, various cars are performing at radically different capabilities. When it's intermediate, we're really fast. When it's wet, we're not. And, that has to do with a number of variables, a lot of things that we can't change at this point. It's just kind of fun to see how it plays out. But, every time the skies open up, I'm like 'oh no.' Every time it starts to dry a just little bit or at least take the standing water or rooster tails away, then we can really chew up the guys in front of us. So hopefully, it dries out here and we'll be strong."
